Dear LIHA Families,
Greetings from the LIHA Board! We hope that this letter finds you well during this trying time. As Covid-19 has impacted the organizations usual course of business of both winding down the last season and planning for the next, we have had to make adjustments on how we do
business. Due to this adverse situation the LIHA Board has not been able to have our monthly
face to face meetings and instead, over the past couple of months, we have been having
meetings every couple of weeks over zoom. We want to provide the Association with some
This letter is broken into sections with updates on the 2020-21 season & registration, Results of the Board election, and LIHA Annual meeting. We have also attached a letter from our Hockey Director and Jr. Stars Coach, Eric Alexander, with information about at-home conditioning.
The election for the 3 open seats on the Board of Directors concluded in April.
Every year the LIHA board holds an Annual Meeting which is open to the membership. The open meeting consists of brief reports from the Directors and Committees and provides an opportunity for the Members to ask questions and give feedback to the Board. This meeting has been a part of the March board meetings for years, however Covid-19 has prevented the board from meeting in person since February. Since it is unknown when we will be able to have an in-
person meeting, we will be holding our 2020 Annual Meeting online.
2020 LIHA Annual Meeting: Wednesday, June 17th, 2020 at 7:00 pm via Zoom
We are still working to determine how best to organize this meeting. Members who wish to participate will need to RSVP so they may be given a passcode to join. More information about the meeting will go out by June 2nd and will include instructions on how to rsvp.
We are currently planning for our 2020-21 regular season and very much hope that our “new-normal” will look a lot like normal!
Restrictions on gatherings, public events and youth activities are still in effect, but are lessening almost weekly. I know everyone is hoping by this fall that most activities will resume. However, it is likely that public health guidance will require us to alter how we operate and it is also possible that a resurgence of Covid-19 may interrupt our season in some way over the next year.
We will be working with our home venues (Ice Box, Breslow), USA Hockey, MWAHA as well as seeking guidance from local authorities over the coming months to determine how best to protect our families while also providing a great hockey experience. USA Hockey and MWAHA hold their annual meetings in June and the impacts of Covid-19 will be a major topic of discussion. We will provide further updates from our governing bodies as we receive them.
We know that the Covid-19 pandemic and restrictions have impacted our families in many ways and that many are reorganizing their priorities. To get a better gauge on how this will affect LIHA registration and operations, the board will be sending out a quick poll to current LIHA members. As part of our planning process each year, there is a discussion on the amount of ice we will
need to reserve. As you all know, the ice time is a huge expense and takes an enormous
amount of planning for the Association as a whole. We will be asking if you or your youth players will be registering for the next season (or not) and at which age-level and skill level (travel, house) you would be participating. We will also provide space for comments so you may communicate your concerns about the upcoming season and provide suggestions that LIHA could implement to help you be safe and productive.
Knowing how many players we have at each level is critical for us to provide the opportunities you and your players want. Please keep a look out for this poll over the next week!
This will also apply to the Adult League. The more information that we have will allow us to
plan better for the number teams, divisions, etc. We are well aware of the number of players
per team in the Melrose Division during this last season and do not want to repeat this but we need your help to prepare for that.
Currently, Lincoln does not have any ice available and Omaha has limited ice with severe restrictions. Typically Jr. Stars conduct tryouts at the end of June and the younger groups follow in July and early August. Current guidance is not clear on when it is expected we may hold events like tryouts and it is likely that tryouts may be pushed back by a week or more from when they would normally be held.
Last year we opened registration in early July to help us gauge interest and plan accordingly. We are hopeful that the informal poll will provide the information we need to plan for the number of travel, house and adult teams for the fall. We would like to delay the opening of the registration until we are able to provide more concrete information about the season structure and operation. Such as: Will there be team size or travel restrictions? How to address refunds if the season is interrupted or canceled?
Applications for head and assistant coaches will be available June 1st. This will be for all age groups and all levels.
Thank you for your time and support. We appreciate your patience as we work to plan our next season.
Enjoy the summer, stay safe and we look forward to seeing you next fall!
LIHA Board of Directors
Dear LIHA Members,
I hope everyone is getting through this difficult time and staying safe. I know all of us are
facing challenges during the quarantine and the economic downturn. The Board and myself are
trying everything we can to think ahead and keep things on schedule. As everyone knows, the
rinks have been closed down for the end of spring, and at this time, Breslow Ice Center until the
foreseeable future. Once Breslow opens, LIHA and the Breslow staff should be able to get the
word out to everyone, and you guys can get your kids on the ice once camps and other
activities open back up!
Because of the lack of ice and resources, for the last couple of months, I have been
creating videos full of at-home drills and workouts for the players. This should help give them
ideas of what they can be doing to be staying sharp with their game. At the moment, I have
only created an Instagram account: Coach__Alexander (two underscores). I may venture
further into different types of social media, but at the moment, it’s only Instagram to keep
things easier. If you or your child doesn’t have Instagram, I don’t think you need an account and
can just search for my name. Have fun browsing too, because there are a lot of other great
coaches out there who make similar videos and have a lot of hockey knowledge! Hope to see
you all at the rink soon, and we are thinking about you all during these difficult times!
